Zimmerer, born in Nebraska City on January 23, 1882, demonstrated artistic talent form an early age. His studies took him to prestigious institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, and schools in Paris. Throughout his career, Zimmerer was active in places such as Missouri, Chicago, Indianapolis, and New York, eventually heading the art department at Northwest Missouri Normal School.


Zimmerer's roots in Nebraska City were deeply formative, and he left his mark on the region with works such as a depiction of the historical home at 3rd Avenue and 9th Street, as well as murals adorning the Otoe County Courthouse and the Pioneer Theater. By 1924, Zimmerer relocation to Los Angeles, where he continued his artistic endeavors until his death on October 17, 1965.
